Reinvent Computing: why is it inevitable, and, what are the perspectives. This is a main theme also of my keynotes (maybe, except of no. 1 and 2). The energy consumption of server farms, other ICT infrastructures and supercomputers is heading toward astronomic dimensions and will become unaffordable towards the end of next century or even earlier if we don't intervene. We are witnessing the mainframe age spirit collapsing under the von Neumann syndrome. The Aristotelian model with the von Neumann CPU as the center of the world has become obsolete. To cope with the power wall and the manycore crisis we have to accept the Copernican world of heterogeneous computing systems.

We are forced to go twin-paradigm by disestablishing the monopoly-like dominance of the (instruction-stream-based) von Neumann (vN) paradigm by including the data-stream-based alternative Reconfigurable Computing (RC) paradigm using accelerators like FPGAs (Field-Programmable Gate Arrays). By vN to FPGA conversion speed-up factors and energy saving factors of up to several orders of magnitude have been obtained - depending on the application and on the skills of the conversion implementers - an education issue !

Although these extremely attractive FPGAs came to market already in 1984 the sales figures are still very bad permanently. This is an education problem: the lacking qualification of people doing the conversion or synthesis job or implementing the application development systems. It's a very urgent curriculum issue ! It is shocking, that international curriculum recommendations almost completely ignore these issues needed to prevent the future collapse by the vN syndrome. The importance of the area is indicated by about 20 international series of annual conferences, mostly at least 20 years old. Please, help to rapidly and effectively lobby the curriculum recommendation task forces!

Applauding Comment Syed Zahid Ahmed: "Unfortunately I only electronically met them: Prof. Jonathan Rose (U. Toronto) & Prof. Reiner Hartenstein (TU Kaiserslautern). I can write an entire chapter on them but have limited silicon budget for acknowledgements and indeed cannot exploit Moore's law on font size for obvious reasons! In short: immense thanks to J. Rose for his vision of sharing his publications online with the community & the infamous VPR book. Countless thanks to R. Hartenstein for his amazing keynotes (drove me crazy), contributions to education, Linkedin relationship and not killing me for stealing "visionary" from his keynotes and put it in my thesis title. I dedicate my FPL10 survey presentation [S-3b] (slides were fortunately published! as part of FPL's 20th birthday initiative) to them both in general and in particular slide 26 (education crisis) to R. Hartenstein.
A Visionary Industrial Survey A very interesting book about the theme of these keynotes:
